James Yi Music Director

Born in Songtan, South Korea, and raised in the Lower Mainland, James began studying piano at the age of 16 with the late Edward Parker, and at age 18, took up clarinet with Trisha Buehler.  He received his BA in performance for clarinet under the guidance of Patricia Kostek, and studied piano with Arthur Rowe at UVic.  He currently lives in Victoria, B.C., continuing to be a part of the musical community in the city.

James specializes in teaching, with more than a decade of experience, his students’ age ranges anywhere from 5 to 95.

As an accompanist, he has worked with Fear No Opera, GNS choirs, Salt Spring Singers, and various solo instrumentalists and students in many different genres.

He has worked as summertime music leader at the Cordova Bay United Church and he is currently the music director at St Paul’s United Church in Sidney.

With song and laughter, we celebrate the joys of being together, listening to one another, and singing. We learn from each other in a welcoming, casual and open-hearted atmosphere. There are many skill levels in the choir and we welcome anyone who wants to sing. There are no auditions and reading music is not required.  Music is provided. Choir membership fees are low.

We sing from our extensive repertoire in four-part harmony and sometimes in unison as well.  If you haven’t sung in a choir before, and you don’t know where your vocal comfort level is, we can help you find your section. Though we do not perform for the wider community, we enjoy singing on special occasions for our fellow 55+ members.
