Cordova Bay 55 Plus

Happy February!

Bring your stories of romance and love next Tuesday, February 8, to CB Place, to share with others in celebration of Valentine’s Day!  Drop-In starts at 10 am.

Chinese New Year came in with a bang at CB Place, on Tuesday, February 1, with members finding the year of their birth and accompanying astrological animal, and had lots of fun and games, followed by a delicious lunch, provided by Halibut House, and served by several CB55+ volunteers! Thanks to Barb Waldner and all those who made this social gathering such a good time!

There’s lots going on at CB Place, with Men’s group off to the Maritime Museum and lunch at a pub next week, upcoming theatre and trips, games night in full swing, and new ideas and opportunities blooming! It must be spring! Come on down soon and sign up for something!

Just a reminder that the spring edition of the Blue Heron News will be available to members on March 1st, so make sure you renew your membership before then!

Chinese New Year Celebrations at CB Place

Chinese New Year will be celebrated next Tuesday, Feb. 1, at CB Place, with astrology fun followed by a Chinese luncheon, brought in from the Halibut House.  You must pay $8 for lunch at the CB55+ Office before Friday, Jan. 28.  Contact Pauline Cohen at 381-8120 for more information.  Come on down next Tuesday to see what your astrological sign predicts for you, and enjoy some camaraderie and good food!

Self-Management of Chronic Pain will be starting on Friday, Feb. 18 for six weeks, until March 25, for CB55+ members who have signed up.  It is now full, but if others want to sign up on a waitlist, they can do so.  This free course is offered through the Centre on Aging, and will run from 9:30 to noon every Friday. Topics to be covered will include:  myths about pain, differences between acute and chronic pain, pacing activity and rest, managing fatigue/sleep, physical activity and exercise, medication usage, communicating effectively with health care providers, etc.

Other courses from the Centre on Aging may be offered at CB Place in the future, if there is sufficient interest.  Stay posted for upcoming information.

Members have until the end of January (this Friday) to donate food or clothing items at CB Place, for delivery to Our Place.  Many thanks to Isabelle and Michael Phillips for collecting these needed items and delivering them!

Games Night at CB Place!

Friday night Games Night will be starting this Friday (January 21) at CB Place! Members can drop in from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, to play table tennis, cards, or board games, or chat and watch others play.  Irene Timms has volunteered to lead this new drop-in activity – thank you Irene!  If you have questions, you can contact her at 250-479-7182.  Another member is also trying to organize a night for volleyball in the school gym. More details about this will be forthcoming.

There is also some interest from members who want to watch movies at CB Place, which may be possible now that we have a brand new flat screen TV.  If anyone would like to organize this activity, please let any Board member know what you need to make this happen.

The sign-up list for the Self-Management of Pain course, run by the Centre on Aging, is full. Members can be put on a waitlist, if some people are not able to take this course. The start date is tentatively set for Friday, February 18, for 6 weeks, if an instructor is found. Classes will be held every Friday, from 9:30 until noon, with a 20 minute break. Brochures and information on this and other courses put on by the Centre on Aging are available at the Reception desk at CB Place.

The Valentine’s lunch has been cancelled for this year.  Instead, there will be a social gathering, with stories of romance and other fun activities at the regular Tuesday Drop-in on February 8th. Come and share your love story!

Winter Fun!

Groups are running again for the winter season, so drop in or call the group leader for more information, if you are interested in joining!

Courses at CB Place are well underway for all those members who signed up!  If other members would like to drop in to our exercise classes or computer training classes, please feel free to do so for a nominal fee.  The sign-up list for the proposed Self-Management of Chronic Pain course has met the maximum of 16 participants, but other names will be kept on a waitlist, in case some folks drop out.  Start date for this free course, offered by the Centre on Aging, will be sometime in February, once a facilitator has been found. The time at CB Place will likely be Friday mornings, 9:30 to noon in the Big Room. Stay posted for upcoming details! If this course is popular, we will offer other courses on self-management (i.e., diabetes, chronic disease conditions, balance).

Details on the Valentine’s Luncheon (less than a month away) will be available soon! The place will likely be the Fireside Grill, due to popular demand!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back everyone on Tuesday, January 4, when programs and groups will be starting up again at CB Place! Tuesday Drop-In will feature Peter Gray, from BCAA, to tell us about testing of Seniors’ Driving. The Board will be meeting after Drop-In for the first time in 2011.

Most courses will begin the second week of January, except for the Wednesday Computer class (1:00 to 12:00 on the first and third Wednesdays of each month) and our new Mac Computer training course starting on Friday, January 7 for 6 weeks (10:00 to 12:00). Members can drop in to either of these classes for $5 if there is space, or register for 6 weeks for only $20, and be assured of an available computer. There is still space in Gentle Yoga and Stretch & Strength classes, so sign up soon! Saanich courses will start on January 12. Check the Courses page for more information on all courses offered at CB Place.

Check the Groups pages or with your group leaders to find out when the group(s) of your interest will be starting in the new year.

Many thanks to all those who brought in food and clothing items to CB Place for donation to those less fortunate at Christmas, and especially to Michael Phillips and the hiking group who organized this effort and delivered all the donations to Our Place and to the Mustard Seed. Both organizations were extremely appreciative of our efforts, and the need was great this year.
