Bring Your Magic!
Have you ever wished that there was a magic pill or activity that
could give you a longer, healthier life?
CB55+ may just have the answer. What if there was an activity that could:
- reduce the risk of dementia by improving elasticity in the brain
- minimize chronic pain and reduce the risk of heart disease
- keep you mentally stimulated and add more zest to your life
- boost your confidence by providing a sense of accomplishment
- give you a sense of pride and identity
What miraculous elixir can do all these things? Volunteering!
Volunteering connects people, strengthens bonds and provides an outlet for socialization which combats loneliness and depression. All volunteer positions are flexible in terms of the time commitment and allow for personal interests such as travel. Some roles can all be done from home.
Successful volunteering occurs when you find an activity that plays to your strengths.
If you’re a night owl, making the morning coffee might not be for you!
What would you love to do?
Kitchen Opportunity
CB55+ is seeking qualified people to continue our popular Wednesday Lunch Program. Perhaps you or someone you know is a retired chef; a retired Home Economics (Foods) teacher; or a person with catering skills, willing to volunteer the time to help us for two lunches per month. There are two positions available.
Please contact Sue Williams, Kitchen Liaison for more information, or submit the name and contact information of someone, as well as your own name as the the person referring them to CB55+.
Special Interest Group (SIG) Leader
If you participate in almost any activity through Cordova Bay 55+, your group has a SIG Leader, and sometimes a co-leader. If you see the role they fill as one you would like to help with, reach out to them with your questions; they may welcome a break! Training is available.
Event Coordinator
Work with the individual leader of a special event; receive requests for new events and assist with their review and implementation; act as a liaison between event leaders and those responsible for communication, registration, kitchen, facility bookings; ensure follow-up reports are complete and include recommended changes; prepare reports for the board liaison.
Event Helper
Helpers are needed at events to handle a wide array of tasks including décor, set-up, teardown, serving, coordinating entertainment, cooking, driving a truck, and shopping.
Kitchen helpers
Volunteers in the kitchen serve coffee & goodies to groups on weekday mornings before or after their activities, with a focus on Tuesday morning drop-in before the speaker’s program when great volumes of coffee and tea are consumed. Kitchen volunteers help with prep, making coffee, serving and clean up for the Wednesday lunch program. Kitchen helpers may assist with holiday celebrations, and some special events.
Nominating Committee Chair
The nominating committee is tasked with finding strong candidates for available board positions. The position begins in earnest in the fall and wraps up with board elections at the Annual General Meeting in the spring. The committee consists of three members: the Nominating Chair, one board member, and one member from the general membership. The Nominating Chair should be a member who is active in the organization and knows lots of well-connected members. If you would like more information, see the bylaws under the Members Only page of the website or reach out to the President.
Member of the Board
Perhaps you have board experience elsewhere and you want to step right up and serve as a member of the board of directors. Lots of information is available here on the website, especially under the Members Only section—or reach out to an existing board member for more information.
