Gwen MacPherson gives acceptance remarks

The Founders Award recognizes a CB 55+ Volunteer who has demonstrated excellence in service to the membership. Through their exemplary efforts and achievements, they have supported their peers and the membership in advancing the vision and mission of the Association.

Gwen MacPherson is the first to reach out to help fellow members when there is need, whether it be for a shoulder to rest on or the need for a ride. She has a sympathetic ear and always has time to listen to people’s concerns or worries. She is a unique human and CB 55+ is all the better for her ongoing contributions and all that she has done.

Gwen is one of the original “Fab 5” who helped create CB 55+ in 2004. Through their persistence and tenacity, and numerous meetings with the District of Saanich, CB 55+ was born. It is appropriate as one of the founders that she be the first honoree of the CB 55+ Founders Award.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind at CB 55+ that Gwen upholds the mission and reminds us of our roots and purpose. Her quiet commitment belies the strength of her conviction in maintaining the values of the organization and reminding us if we occasionally stray from the path. In her day-to-day dealings and interaction with people Gwen shows respect and care for the members and is able to bring out the best in people.

Through her leadership and involvement Gwen demonstrates her ongoing commitment to CB 55+ and has been instrumental in its growth and success. Those in a leadership role often turn to her for advice which is offered in a compassionate and thoughtful way. CB 55+ would not be today what it is without the ongoing contribution and nurturing from Gwen MacPherson.

Gwen served as a Board member, and helped to start On the Go Again (OTGA) which epitomizes the original mission of the organization — helping seniors who may be isolated and lonely. In addition, Gwen volunteers with the “Studio Group” to make crafts that are sold to raise money for other less-privileged groups. She has been active in the Intergenerational (IG) Program which works with the children in Cordova Bay Elementary School helping them with their reading, learning how to cook, or even to play pickleball. In addition to being a member of the Blue Heron Singers; Gwen is a member of the Poetry Group, and developed the technical skills to link everyone together via Zoom.
