On Tuesday March 8th, International Women’s Day, Jill Leslie from the organization ‘Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan’ gave us an informative and timely presentation on the role Canadian women are playing in securing human rights for Afghan women and girls.
Unfortunately the Spring Dinner and Show, which was to be held May 14th, has been cancelled due to a lack of interest.
If you are planning on attending the 7th Annual Dinner and Show PLEASE let the office <email@example.com> know before Friday, March 11. This is an enjoyable and painless fund raising event. For your $50 ticket you will receive a lovely buffet dinner, great entertainment and lots of camaraderie. There will also be a fund raising raffle worth $1500 to $2000. The sooner we know if there is enough interest to hold this event the sooner we can make arrangements for the entertainment. Just let us know your intentions by Friday, March 11. You will not be asked to pay for your ticket until we know we have enough people attending to make it a go. Bring a friend – they don’t need to be a member

Spring Course Registration Day is on Tuesday, March 8 (after drop-in) for members to sign up and pay for courses they would like to take during the spring months . Judy Burgoyne will be looking after registration.
At our last Tuesday drop-in we were all moved by the presentation of The Victoria Riding for the Disabled Association. This is an organization that provides horseback riding programs for children and adults with disabilities to improve their physical, psychological and social well being.
Fab Five We are very proud of our founders who received a certificate of recognition from the Beacon Community Services and Peninsula News. They are Inez Cole, who first visuallized the concept, Gwen MacPherson, Daphne Chazottes, Jack Willoughby and Rich McMorran. They are affectionatley known to us as the Fab Five. It was their foresight, inspiration and hard work starting in 1999 that made our CB 55+ Association what it is today. Thank you Fab Five! In our eyes you deserve Olympic gold.
The spring edition of the Blue Heron News will be available to members only on March 1st, so make sure you renew your membership before then. The newsletter is full of information. For example the grand opening of the Courtyard Garden, calendar of all the group activities planned for the next three months, future plans for our association, and much more.

This would be a good time to drop by the centre with a friend, enjoy a cup of coffee (donation please), use the computers, browse through the library and enjoy the friendship of other members.
Spring Dinner and Show The 7th annual Spring Dinner and Show is planned for Saturday evening May 14, 2011 at the Greek Orthodox Church Hall (beside Commonwealth Place) – wheelchair accessible. Bring a friend – they don’t need to be a member. This is a fundraiser for needed shelving throughout the centre. For your $50 ticket you will receive a lovely buffet dinner, great entertainment and lots of camaraderie, There will also be a prize raffle. Please let Rich McMorran know or reply to cb55 <firstname.lastname@example.org> as soon as possible.
Self-Management of Chronic Pain This participatory course will give people (and/or their spouses) tools to manage chronic pain and live a healthy life. It is put on by the Centre on Aging, and offered across BC to anyone experiencing chronic pain from any source (eg., fibromyalgia, whiplash injury, multiple sclerosis, etc.) Printed information is available on the reception desk at CB Place.
The classes are free to CB 55+ members (another reason to keep your membership active). You have the option to attend the first class to see if you would like to continue with the course. There is no need to join until the second session. Classes are on Fridays, Feb 18 to March 25, 9:30 – 12:00 pm in the Courtyard Room. The minimum number of participants is 8 and maximum 16. If interested members must register at the CB55+ office prior to the second class (Feb.25).
What do you love about CB55+? All those groups, Tuesday drop-in programs, special events, courses, and services happen because of the many dedicated volunteers who help out in so many ways, on the Board, on various committees, leading groups, serving coffee, setting up chairs, arranging programs and events, letting you know what’s going on, looking after your membership and course fees, entertaining you, teaching you, and stimulating you every day! CB55+ is fortunate to have lots of eager and caring members who make CB Place a vibrant, healthy environment for all! If you have interests, skills, and enthusiasm that you are willing to share, please consider joining the CB55+ Board or one of the many committees that help CB55+ to run smoothly and successfully. Talk to Louise Parton or Gwen MacPherson on the Nominating Committee, or any Board member, and take an active part in guiding this Association into the next decade!

The President of the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs, Richard Alexander, will be speaking briefly at the next Tuesday Drop-In (Feb. 15) about what’s going on in the community. There will also be a membership table set up after Drop-In, at 11:30, for people to join or renew their membership with the Cordova Bay Association for Community Affairs!
The next Blue Heron Newsletter will be distributed on Tuesday, March 1. If you can receive it by email, that saves paper and printing, so please ensure that the CB55+ office has your up-to-date email address. There will be sufficient printed copies for those members without computers.
