Emergency Reception Centre
CB 55+ Becomes An Emergency Reception Centre.
CB55+ Emergency Services Exercise
On the evening of Wednesday, September 30, 2015, CB55+ was transformed into an Emergency Reception Centre by Saanich Emergency Services for a training exercise. The scenario was that the Mattick’s Wood development was in danger from an approaching urban interface forest fire, and the residents should evacuate.
At 6:00 pm volunteers from Emergency Social Services began setting up to receive the evacuees. They established a Registration area in the Studio, a communications center in the Seaside Room and a volunteer comfort station in the Courtyard Room.
About 6:30 pm volunteers from Emergency Search and Rescue started knocking on doors at Mattick’s Wood and encouraged people to “evacuate” to CB55+. Helen Maxwell and I were serving coffee and goodies to the volunteers and evacuees, so we weren’t actively involved in the exercise, but there were quite a few residents who arrived, were processed and were offered goodies.
About 7:30 pm there was a short debriefing for the evacuees by the Saanich Fire Department staff responsible for Emergency Services, and then a debrief for the volunteers.
By 9:00 pm or so, everyone was gone and things were back to normal, ready for the Thursday lunch routine the next day. The Fire Department staff and the volunteers were very pleased with the facilities that CB55+ is able to offer them and they said they would be happy to do more exercises with us in the future.
