Cordova Bay Elementary was one of this year’s recipients of the Golden Star Award. This is an award sponsored by the B.C. Retired Teachers’ Association (BCRTA). There will be a presentation and recognition of this award at a school assembly on June 1st. Several of our members who have been very active with the Intergenerational programs will be invited to attend.
The BCRTA Golden Star Awards have been established to recognize and reward programs in the public education system of British Columbia that have as their salient feature the interaction of B.C. students with seniors. Five awards are made each year and carry a $1,000 grant to the school.
This award is something worth recognizing and celebrating. We should acknowledge all the members of CB55+, who over the years have worked with the many intergenerational programs and especially Val Murray and Diane Cowden for their leadership.
The registration for May and June courses will take place from Thursday, April 16th onward. Please note that the registering for Stretch and Strength has gone back to the original way of registering. However, Punch Cards will be necessary for everyone from May onward in order to attend a class.

The Annual General Meeting of CB55+ was held on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at CB Place.
A Special Meeting, with a notice of motion, preceded the AGM. Our Bylaws state that any expenditure over $3,000 must be approved by the membership. The Special Meeting asked for approval of the purchase of a large television for the Big Room to replace the one that is there and move the television currently in the Big Room to the Studio. The motion was passed.
Our guest speaker was Anthony Minniti — CB Association President — who spoke on “Current Issues in Cordova Bay”. The Association business, which included reports from the Standing Committees (programs, Services and Governance Committees) and that of the Treasurer were carried.
Rand Harrison, Chair of the Nominating Committee, handled the elections. CB55+ now has 13 Board of Directors – but the position of Secretary is vacant. As there were no nominations from the floor the slate of directors was acclaimed with one new Director welcomed (Sue Williams). Thanks Rand and members of the Nominating Committee for your hard work.
Following the meeting, our hard working kitchen volunteers and Board of Directors served us lunch, which consisted of sandwiches and sweets.
March 17th CB55+ celebrated a St. Patrick’s Day Ceilidh with our wonderful Blue Heron Singers. We were treated to lovely old Irish songs, many Irish poems and limericks and of course the audience was invited to sing along as well.
After our morning of music Val Baba and her crew of helpers treated us with a great lunch. The menu included Irish Leek and Potato Soup, a Ukrainian Easter Chick bun, a sweet and a beverage.
Thank you Pat Robertson and Val Baba – without these talented ladies there would be no singing and empty tummies at CB Place!!!
Important News for CB55+ members:
Our AGM is scheduled for March 24th, 2015. This is the time the Board is elected for the coming year. We are seeking nominations for new Board members. Rand Harrison has kindly agreed to Chair the Nominating Committee and is currently appointing a small committee to help. If you are interested in standing for the Board, you are invited to contact him and discuss it with him. His email is email@example.com. We also accept nominations from the floor on the day of the AGM.
Each member with email will receive the official notification of the AGM along with the Agenda and Treasurer’s report. The phone committee will inform those without email, and information will also be in the Spring Blue Heron Newsletter. The reports from the President, the Treasurer, and the three Standing Committees (Programs, Services, and Governance) will be available in the Centre or on request at least two weeks prior to the AGM.
You will also receive notification of a Special Meeting, with a notice of motion, that will precede the AGM. Our Bylaws state that any expenditure over $3,000 must be approved by the membership. The Special Meeting will be to ask for approval of the purchase of a large television for the Big Room to replace the one that is there and move the television currently in the Big Room to the Studio. The motion and rationale will be included with the Agenda.

Two new groups have started for CB55+ members: “Walking with Dogs” meets on Friday mornings at various trailheads, whose members walk with other members and their dogs off-leash, and enjoy a variety of parks across the Greater Victoria area. “Sunday Games” is a drop-in group for members to join others on the third Sunday of each month at the Centre to play card and board games and socialize with one another. For more information, see the Groups category on this website.
